Core Principles of Trauma-Informed Care

In this module participants will delve into the foundational concepts essential for implementing trauma-informed practices in medical settings. Central to the curriculum is the exploration of the “4 R’s”: the processes of Realizing the prevalence of trauma, Recognizing its effects, Responding with appropriate care, and Resisting the potential for Retraumatization. Participants will learn strategies to foster a safe environment, particularly for those grappling with medical PTSD, and gain expertise in tailoring care to mitigate the risk of triggering medical trauma reactions. The significance of adopting a “universal precautions” approach will be underscored, emphasizing its relevance in ensuring every patient is treated with the awareness that they might have experienced trauma. The module will also emphasize Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) principles, guiding learners on crafting welcoming and accessible environments. Additionally, the curriculum will address the nuances of cultural influences on trauma responses, highlighting the complexities of applying Western trauma constructs across diverse cultural contexts.

Through this comprehensive module, participants will be equipped with the knowledge and tools to offer empathetic, culturally sensitive, and trauma-informed care.
