Self-Care and Secondary Trauma

In this module participants will confront the often-overlooked challenges faced by medical professionals due to their occupational exposure to trauma. The curriculum will shed light on the profound effects of witnessing patients’ suffering, especially from medical PTSD, and how such experiences can lead to secondary trauma in caregivers. To combat these challenges, emphasis will be placed on building personal resilience and embracing the principles of trauma stewardship to safeguard one’s own mental and emotional well-being. The module will also weave in vital Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) components, guiding participants through the process of self-reflection. This reflective practice aims to foster and deepen cultural humility, ensuring that caregivers not only tend to their patients with sensitivity but also extend the same care and understanding to themselves.

Upon completing this module, learners will be better equipped to recognize, address, and mitigate the impacts of secondary trauma while growing in their cultural understanding and self-awareness.
