In this module participants will dive deep into the challenges anesthesia providers often face when attempting to integrate trauma-informed practices into their care. Among the commonly cited barriers are a palpable lack of institutional resources and support for TIC, apprehensions surrounding documentation and legal obligations, the tension between maintaining productivity and delivering trauma-sensitive care, personal discomfort in addressing trauma-related issues, and the debilitating effects of vicarious trauma on TIC proficiency. To navigate these challenges, the curriculum will offer a suite of problem-solving strategies, from advocating for enhanced TIC training and protocols to seeking legal guidance on documentation intricacies. Participants will be guided on setting achievable goals for phased TIC integration, leveraging simulation for skill acquisition, and championing a team-based approach to manage workload efficiently. Addressing the ripple effects of vicarious trauma, the module will underscore the importance of accessing support mechanisms. A significant component will be dedicated to promoting organizational change, emphasizing diverse representation in leadership, forging community advocacy partnerships, and critically assessing policies through a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) framework. Participants will be encouraged to introspect on their motivations for adopting trauma-informed care and will be assisted in developing a personalized plan that anticipates and addresses potential barriers.
By the end of this module, learners will be well-equipped to champion trauma-informed care in their practice, overcoming challenges with informed strategies and steadfast commitment.
