Cultural Humility in Trauma-Informed Care

In this module participants will delve into the profound interplay between culture and trauma, exploring how diverse cultural backgrounds shape individual trauma experiences and subsequent responses. The curriculum will highlight the heightened medical trauma experienced by marginalized patients, often exacerbated by historical instances of unethical treatment. A key focus will be on the importance of refraining from making cultural assumptions during the screening and treatment processes. Learners will be equipped with strategies to mitigate inherent biases, emphasizing the use of inclusive and respectful language. The module will also address potential barriers that patients from different cultural backgrounds might face when disclosing their trauma experiences. Furthermore, participants will be guided on connecting patients to culturally competent services, ensuring that care is both trauma-informed and culturally sensitive.

By the end of this module, learners will possess a holistic understanding of cultural humility, paving the way for more compassionate and culturally attuned trauma-informed care.
