In this module participants will embark on a comprehensive exploration of the multifaceted nature of trauma and its profound effects on health. Starting with an overview, learners will gain insights into the prevalence of trauma and the diverse events classified as traumatic. The curriculum will delve into the physical and psychological repercussions of trauma, emphasizing the often overlooked perspective that medical interventions, ranging from routine treatments to major surgeries and transplants, can themselves be traumatic experiences. A notable focus will be on the prevalence of PTSD symptoms post serious medical events. The module will also spotlight disparities in trauma burden, highlighting the disproportionate effects on marginalized communities. A significant portion will be dedicated to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) considerations, discussing the heightened trauma prevalence among underrepresented populations. The curriculum will further address the role systemic inequities and biases play in amplifying trauma and the historical trauma that seeds mistrust in healthcare systems among certain communities.
Through this module, participants will acquire a holistic understanding of trauma, its implications, and the broader societal factors that contribute to its prevalence.
